Prostitution is known as the worlds oldest profession. However, in many areas of the world prostitution proves itself popular and vital to this day. Such a popular and enduring profession has not gone without controversy. Presently prostitution is illegal in many areas of the United States. But, as we all know, the United States was not founded on the Bible, so we cannot trust our laws for moral guidance (even though we should obey them). Thus we should examine prostitution using his Holy Word, and see what God would have us do.
After a thorough examination of his holy Word, I believe the answer is clear. God approves of you offering yourself for sex in exchange for money. But that is my interpretation, so let us open up the Good Book and you can make your own decision.
First let me state that nowhere does the Bible expressly prohibit or encourage prostitution. So this is a bit of a gray area, where we need to examine closely the prostitutes that are in the Bible, and how the Bible addresses them. Thankfully there are many prostitutes within the Bible and we have many points of interest to look at.
The Old Testament
Genesis 38 15-17
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”, “And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked. 17 “I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.
Judah is the father of the Tribe of Judah, one of the twelve Tribes of Israel. As shown in Genesis 49 he is clearly a blessed man by both God and Jacob. This holy man named Judah obviously had no problem hiring a prostitute. But I want to examine something here. As shown in verse 21, he actually thought Tamar (his daughter in law) was a shrine prostitute. It was the practice at the time that having sex with a shrine prostitute (either male or female) would bring blessings from God. I do not know if this practice continues today. The possibility is there! Try going to a church and offering yourself up as a temple prostitute. Perhaps others will receive blessings from God because of your faithful act.
As a young child Sampson was my favourite hero from the Bible. God blessed Sampson with the strength of many men. Sampson was faithful to God, and for that God did bless Sampson. Truly he was a man to be looked up to. So let us look at the example that a Godly hero like Sampson sets for us all.
Judges 16:1 One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her.
And if such a man of God as Sampson is visiting prostitutes. Surely this profession is something God would approve for anyone.
