Does God endorse socialism as his preferred economic model?
It is very easy to see that God wants us all to be Socialists. In today’s study we will open our Bibles and see how God has provided a clear answer to this question.
Somehow many of today’s Christians somehow have mistaken impression that Capitalism is the economic system that Christ would most endorse. Any examination of God’s holy Word will easily show that this simply isn’t true. Our heroes from the days of old endear themselves to Socialism, and it shows us that God’s love for us can shine even through economics. There is no doubt that the concepts of Socialism permeates both the Old and New Testaments. I have no idea where these false ideas of Capitalism being what God would want came from. As his children, we must end this! We must study his Word deeply and set straight the mindset of our fellow brethren.
So to get started, let us open up His Holy Word and learn what the Bible has to say on economics. We will begin in the Old Testament.
35If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. 36Do not take interest of any kind from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you. 37You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit. 38I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.
Is there any doubt in these words? This command from God should put a fear into all of us. This is how the Lord our God has told us to live, with or without Government.
16This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather as much as he needs. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’ 17The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18And when they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. Each one gathered as much as he needed.
And here the Bible even uses the word ‘commanded’. This God has done for us so that there is little doubt that this a command from the Lord our God.
But as we all know, we must examine the whole Bible and not just the Old Testement. We never know when the New Covenent might change the laws of old so we don’t have to obey them anymore.
John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.”
But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
34There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.
And there we see it in the New Testament also! Socialism is the economic system from the Lord our God. It is what he has command of us, and it is what those believers before us have followed. We know that the early Christians followed a life of communal living. The rich shared with the poor and the poor shared with the rich. Why would any of us want to be rich? The Bible has so clearly warned us of it’s perils!
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
What an exciting thing that these instructions have been so clearly laid out for us! That is right and good, for we know that in life some are more unfortunate than others. There are those who are born blind or without limbs, and there are those who are born able to jump 10 feet in the air. God knew this, and he knew Socialism was the was for those who could jump 10 feet in the air to share with those who had no legs. 1 Corinthians 12 tells us that we are all given our spiritual gifts. We are one body and each of us has our part. Some are given the gift to earn money and provide, and others are given the gift to pray for and care for others spiritually.
Now that we know what God wants for us, the question is should this be forced upon us legally or not? If we are all Christians and love the Lord, then we do not need laws telling us to abide by the principles of Socialism. This is true! However, sadly, we are not all Christians. It is a similar situation with murder. All of us loving Christians know not to murder each other, but others that are not Christians do not know this. So in all countries there are laws telling us not to murder. Similarly we need laws telling us to follow Socialism.
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
There are some bad things that the Bible does not even tell us are wrong. He simple has put it in our hearts to know they are wrong. Slavery is not said to be wrong anywhere in the Bible. We all know in our hearts that it is though. Most countries have laws making slavery illegal, even though the Bible says nothing against slavery. Socialism is clearly in the Bible and clearly endorsed by God, should this not also be law?
We need to read and understand his Word. In 1 Timothy we learn of the evils of Capitalism. We do not get to keep our money after we die, so why should we spend our life toiling for riches?
1 Timothy 6:6-10
6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
I have said that many believers out there have the false belief that Capitalism is best. There is peril in this. 1 Timothy also warns us about false doctrines. These verses describe the Capitalism with perfection.
1 Timothy 6:3-5
3If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
If you are not on the road to Socialism I encourage you to set your path straight. If your Government has not passed Socialism into law, I would encourage you to change these laws. If is your Christian duty to do so in order to look after those that don’t believe as you do. You need to help the unbeliever, even if he would fight against you. Love your enemies, as the Lord has said.
As this study concludes, I leave you with other verses to read on your own. Take these verses and meditate on them. Be sure and know what economic system the Lord would have for you. Take these words the Lord has put in your heart and spread the Socialist economic system to others in order to show your love for them.
