Does the Bible support having an abortion?
The answer is an unequivocal yes! But don’t take my word for it, let us actually open up the Bible and read it’s words.
20 But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority, and if you have defiled yourself and some man other than your husband has lain with you”— 21 then the priest shall put the woman under the oath of the curse, and he shall say to the woman—“the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh rot and your belly swell; 22 and may this water that causes the curse go into your stomach, and make your belly swell and your thigh rot.”
Then the woman shall say, “Amen, so be it.”
In this first section God himself (also known as the Lord) performs the abortion at the request of the priest. Make no mistake about it, “your thigh rot” can certainly be translated to read “causes you to have a miscarrying womb and barrenness”. You can look it up in the NIV translation, it’s a footnote on the bottom. Thigh can also be read as “uterus”, since obviously there are no thighs in the belly.
So the Bible actually says that God himself is to perform the abortions in these cases. I know you are well convinced by now that since God is performing abortions that it is ok for you to have one. But, it is not a problem to look at some other verses just to re-assure ourselves. After all, Focus on the Family says abortions are bad, and they have read the Bible, haven’t they? No really, have they? Ever?
In Hosea there are more abortions performed. These ones are performed by soldiers with swords though. I suppose a sword is a bit harder to use than a coat hanger, but they get the job done. The context of this verse is that it is in the end of a command from God in judgment against Israel.
The people of Samaria must bear their guilt,
because they have rebelled against their God.
They will fall by the sword;
their little ones will be dashed to the ground,
their pregnant women ripped open.”
And I suppose the fact that the mothers are likely also being killed is a technicality. A fetus is a fetus and killing it is an abortion whether commanded by God or not. There is one other place where the fetus is commented on directly in relation to the law. Let us look in the good book of Exodus.
22 “If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
This is another time where you have to open up your NIV and look at the footnote. “gives birth prematurely” can also be interpreted as “she has a miscarriage”. So that would mean that the Bible does not consider a fetus a life. The same passage that demands life for life of the mother does not demand life for loss of a fetus. The Bible is clear on this. A fetus is not a life.
Now before we finish lets us discuss abortion for a moment. Those who would want one performed are seeking quality of life for themselves and the possible child. They cannot support the child financially or it gets in the way of their career or they just are allergic to babies. In short: if quality of life is lost, perhaps they will have the abortion. So to further add to the fact that the Bible openly supports abortions, there are a few places where quality of life is discussed. See Ecclesiastes 6:3-5, Job 10:18-19, and Ecclesiastes 4:1-3 for verses where the person wishes he had been aborted. These last few are just small examples, but clearly they show that the Bible is concerned with quality of life for the born child, and adding the the fact that the Bible does support having abortions.
